As a member of the TEDxNYED audience, a fan of the SLA kids who did the front-of-house video work (brilliant choice, esp. given the undercurrent of all that was discussed on the stage), and the curator/co-organizer for TEDxBloomington (IN) in the spring of 2011, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking time to share these details.

Our team will definitely be in touch over time to dig into the gritty details, but thanks in advance for giving us a big-picture horizon line to gaze at as we push hard for the next 13+ months to pull of our own TEDx event.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your setup - I appreciate it! We're going to use a similar setup (though much less expensive kit) for our school broadcasts.

Yep, that's right, let's train those lawyers for a world they wont live in.

And look at that photo. There is a guy doodling pictures of his girl friend on the yellow pad. The guy in the red sweatshirt? He is day dreaming of his spring break. Bald guy in yellow shirt? Has a sports illustrated hiding under the notebook.

Just cause they dont have tech in the room, does that mean their minds are all there? We've always had distractions.

Your article helps make the point of why I hate the term "digital natives." People seem to think that just because our students are born into this age of integrated technology that they all have equal access to it. Not the case by a long shot! A very real digital discrimination exists, and is perhaps an oft ignored issue which should be made more center stage than others.

While considering possible applications for blogging in my third grade class, I began to question my ability to make a positive change in my students educational experience through the use of the blog. It seemed premature to expose children to the dangers of blogging of eight years of age. I saw the error in my thinking when I read Davis’s description of how she used blogging to teach second graders about the responsibility of using a technological tool well, about being ambassadors of their class, school and country. Since our students are using blogs at an increasing rate, it is necessary for educators to become role models in their use. I realized that I can, at the third grade level, begin to plant “seeds so that when they are teenagers and want to ‘write all,’ maybe, just maybe they’ll ponder the results.” (Davis 2006)

Arvind - We've been using TeamSupport.com for a while and really like it. Somewhat different philosophy on design than Zen, but a very powerful and easy to use program.

Richard, we really like the simplicity and the ability to just use e-mail (from the user side). I'll try to keep you posted on how things go when we really deploy site-wide.

I don't completely understand the purported correlation between having lots of devices and losing interpersonal and reading skills. Have you ever seen an explanation of how this would actually happen to an adult? As for students, they lost the habit of reading for pleasure long ago. I think one can carry a handheld device and maintain a face-to-face conversation with another person.

We are currently running Altiris HelpDesk, as part of our Windows deployment solution. When Symantec acquired Altiris, we purchased three more years at the old rate. This is a long way of saying that we will be evaluating new helpdesk solutions next year. Thank you for sharing your plans.
